• the Ford Foundation, where he was involved in the adoption of new food production technologies in developing countries.
• The German Development Assistance Organization, GIZ, where he led resource management programs including programs for sustainable fisheries management.
• United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) as the first director of the newly established WFP Office of Evaluation and as Country Director for the UN-WFP in Bangladesh.
• World Bank (IBRD) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) where he was Chairman of independent panels that help ensure compliance of these international banks with agreed environmental and social standards.
• In recent years, he has also been involved in various civil society initiatives and chaired the board of Fairtrade America and was Vice-Chair of Fairtrade International Certification (FLO – CERT).
• Holds a Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University, USA, and an undergraduate degree from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna/Austria.
• Has been member of professional associations including the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA).
