PANEL 1 – MARINE PROTECTED AREAS: EXPANDING THE PROTECTION OF OUR OCEAN

Theme – Ecological Connectivity, Governance, Finance and Economy

Science has demonstrated that properly designed and implemented marine protected areas (MPAs) are effective tools for the conservation of marine biodiversity and ocean resources management. Such areas have been recognized for their contribution to climate change resilience and food security. MPAs provide secure habitats for endemic and endangered species and offer protection for entire marine ecosystems and for the communities that depend on them for their sustainability. The success of MPAs requires effective and efficient governance strategies that promote ecological connectivity as well as integrity, among the social and economic activities directly related to these areas.

Subtheme: The effect of climate change on the health of the ocean: biodiversity and coastal communities

We are currently facing a critical situation where human activities have caused an imbalance in global climate processes. Marine and coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves and seagrass meadows, have enormous potential as carbon sinks, biodiversity hotspots and buffers against climate risks, therefore we must promote science and ecosystem-based management approaches, supported by regional and global assessments, to develop better practices and conservation strategies, as well as restoration projects globally as they are essential to the well-being of coastal communities around the world.

PANEL 4 – SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES: FINDING ANSWERS

To reap the benefits of a resilient ocean, we must prioritize the protection of biodiversity and the long-term sustainability of the world’s fish stocks. In this sense, we must face the challenges to protect the ocean and ensure food for coastal communities, sustainable fisheries and reproduction of marine species. To accomplish this goal, we should promote fishery certification processes and apply new technologies to assure sustainability and transparency in our fisheries.

The ocean is the primary source of nutrition, jobs, and income for about 40% of the global population. The ocean’s continued contribution to the global economy requires a balance between economic, social activities and needs, as well as the sustainable use of marine resources and services. It is urgent to adapt economic activities related to the ocean and others that affect it, such as tourism, directing them towards a model that adjusts to current environmental and social demands for the benefit of present and future generations.
